Critical Minerals: Global Overview and the Situation in Argentina

The Centre for International Economy (CEI), under Argentina's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has published a report on the growing importance of critical minerals amid the energy transition and geopolitical competition. The study identifies 90 minerals considered critical globally, with demand projected to grow up to fourfold by 2040.

The report highlights Argentina as a strategic supplier in an expanding market, particularly in lithium (the world's 5th-largest producer) and copper (over 115 million tonnes of resources), alongside development-stage projects for rare earths, nickel, graphite and other high-demand minerals. It also reviews Argentina's regulatory framework, including the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI), and the critical minerals agreements signed with France, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, the European Union and the United States.
